Why The Daughter Shift exists
I'm on this shift too.
I'm caring for my mom, who is in the progressing stages of dementia. Nothing prepared me for how much care she would need, or for the grief that comes with watching someone you love slowly change in front of you.
I didn't know where to turn. I was figuring out how to share the load with my sister while still working full time. My sister and I support our mom both financially and physically, and the weight of making sure she's properly cared for never really lifts.
The hardest moment came when she was staying with me and had a heart attack. Getting through that emergency while still holding down my job was one of the most difficult things I've ever done.
"I was fighting for the right care, and sometimes fighting her on what the best care was."
And I wasn't the only one carrying guilt. My mom battled it too: the fear of being a burden, the pain of forgetting who her own children were, and the courage it takes to face the hard days anyway.
The Daughter Shift is what I wish I'd had at the beginning. It's a place to be honest about the guilt, the grief, and the love, with practical tools for the days in between. You can love them and still be exhausted. You're not doing it wrong.
